The City of Elkhorn is a lovely city located in Walworth County, Wisconsin. It is southwest of Milwaukee and northeast of Chicago.
Elkhorn’s motto is, “Living in Harmony” which is reflected in the traditional small town values and the community’s musical background from source band instrument manufacturers and repair, historical significance of composer Joseph Webster of Civil War days and the Elkhorn-Holton Band.
In the 19th century, Colonel Samuel Phoenix noticed elk antlers stuck in the branches of a tree and therefore named the area “Elk Horn”. The areas natural beauty and great farming soil soon drew people and the village was born.
Elkhorn was elected the County seat in 1846 and today still acts as the primary community The County Government Center is surrounded by a beautiful park and is the focal point of downtown Elkhorn.
The County Government Center park was where people would send off soldiers during World War II. Today the park has become the location of really fun and interesting Christmas decorations, which is the reason the city is known as the “Christmas Card Town”.
“The Christmas Card Town” is celebrated every year with oil paintings from local resident Jan Castle Reed depicting the City’s historical landmark. The tradition of the “Christmas Card Town” began in the 1950s with watercolor paintings from Cecil Johnson for Ford Motor Company. Elkhorn has been home to the Walworth County Fair since 1851. It has been called one of the best fairs in the nation and today leads to 100,000+ tourists to Elkhorn every year.
There are tons of great parks and schools located in Elkhorn. In 2001, the Common Council deemed it necessary to improve and expanded recreational activities for the rapidly growing population. Today, there are many programs offered year-round to all ages like softball, baseball, flag football, swimming at the new, heated Sunset Pool in the Summer and Elkhorn High School in the Winter. In addition, there is music classes, craft classes, tennis lessons, exercise classes and much more.
The Elkhorn Antique Flea Market occurs four times throughout each year at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. There are over 500 venders and tons of visitors arrive from nearby communities and counties to discover the sales.
For a great bit to eat and a whole lot of history The Elk is the perfect place. In 1912, the Wales family swapped the building for 6 acres on the west side of Elkhorn. At the time the building was occupied by Sperry Bros. Restaurant and State Distance Telephone Company. Eventually candy-making was added to the operations business. The building would change hands several more times over the years. By 1953 the restaurant became known as The Elk and was purchases by Darrell Wales, and has remained in the family ever since. They are proud to be family owned and welcome all to The Elk Restaurant in the historic Wales Building.
